Absence

We have a "call back system" in place to help ensure the safety of our children. The success of this program rests very much upon the co-operation of parents keeping phone numbers current and calling the school office before 9:00 am each time a child is going to be absent or late.

Call Back Procedure

Please call the school before 9:00 a.m. (204-669-1277) and speak to the secretary or leave a message on the answering machine.  Our answering machine is on 24 hours a day.

Include:

  • name of child
  • name of person calling
  • name of homeroom teacher
  • reason for absence
  • date, time and length of absence

Appointments/Picking Up Your Child/Dismissal Arrangements

Parents are asked to make appointments for their children outside of school hours as much as possible. Students who must leave school early for medical, dental appointments, etc. are required to bring a note from a parent to their classroom teacher. Parents picking up their child for an appointment during the school day are asked to meet their child at the office. Parents must sign out their child so the school can account for all students.

Please do not call the school office to change dismissal arrangements for your child after 11:00 a.m. or after 3:00 p.m. unless it is an emergency.

If your child will not be taking the bus, please call °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏÍøÕ¾ Transportation at 204-669-0202.

Dress Code

Students are asked to wear clothing that is appropriate for learning and does not interfere with the educational process. Hats and jackets are considered outside attire, and they are not to be worn in the school. At Bertrun E. Glavin the following items are not acceptable: revealing clothing and/or beach wear and bare midriffs, t-shirts/sweatshirts with inappropriate messages and any items depicting offensive language or messages are unacceptable. Footwear (with non-marking soles) must be worn at all times. All children are asked to have an inside pair of runners which can be left at school in the classroom. These runners are to be worn inside the school and for all physical education activities. Mitts, scarves and hats must be tucked into the jacket sleeve to prevent them from getting lost. Jackets are to be hung up on the coat hooks provided. Students in grades 3 to 5 must wear shorts, runners and a t-shirt for all gym activities.

Please label each article of clothing clearly with the child's first and last names. This will allow us to return items to their rightful owners should they be misplaced.

Entry and Dismissal

Our bells for entry ring at 8:55 a.m. and 12:45 p.m.  At this time students are expected to enter in a quiet, orderly fashion, take off their outdoor boots/shoes, hang their outer clothing neatly in their designated coat areas and proceed quietly to their class.  At 11:45 a.m. and 3:25 p.m. students are expected to leave the building quickly and quietly through the assigned exits and go straight home or to the arranged caregiver.

Students are only allowed to remain in school after dismissal times if participating in an extracurricular activity. Parents/guardians are asked to sign permission forms to indicate that their child has permission to participate. In such cases they are required to take their outdoor clothing and their homework to the activity. They will be dismissed directly from the activity. They are not to return to the classrooms after having been dismissed.

Entrance for extracurricular events: Children who are coming to school for extra-curricular activities before school hours should wait outside the school until the supervising teacher admits them.

Evaluation/Report Cards and Parent Conferences

Evaluation of student achievement in all subjects is administered on a continuous basis throughout the year, using a variety of sources (e.g., daily assignments, projects, classroom observations and tests). The achievements reflected on the report card are a summary of the entire reporting period. Report card marks represent the subject marks for each term. Students in K – 5 are evaluated on a scale of 1 – 5.

Bertrun E. Glavin students will receive a report card three times during the school year (November, March and June). Parent conferences will take place after the November and March reports have been sent home. Subsequent conferences may be arranged by request.

Professional Development/Early Dismissal

Staff is involved in professional development activities considered priorities by our school division. These may be full day or half-day sessions. Students will also be dismissed 45 minutes early six times during the school year. Dismissal on those days will be at 2:40 p.m.  Please watch the monthly bulletin for the exact dates.

Visitors

All visitors and parents are required to report to the school office upon arrival. Visitors are required to sign a school register and wear a visitor’s badge.

To help protect student and staff safety, all doors will be locked between 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. and from 1:00 p.m. onward, except for the front door. The front door will be locked at 4:00 p.m.

Volunteer Program

Bertrun E. Glavin encourages parents to be involved as volunteers in the school. Please visit the office to pick up an application form and volunteer handbook. All volunteers are required to complete a child abuse registry check and to sign a pledge of confidentiality. Volunteers are asked to sign in and out in the office and to wear a volunteer badge while helping at the school. The badge will help the students to identify who the volunteer is in the school and on the playground.
